Law Education in India

Legal education of India generally refers to the education of lawyers before giving entry to the practice. Legal education of India is provided by traditional universities as well as specialized law schools and universities only after the completion of the undergraduate degree or the integrated degree. In India, the student may pursue the legal course after completing the undergraduate course of any discipline. Nevertheless, following national law school replica, one may study law like integrated course having five years subsequent to passing senior secondary examination.

Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) - LL.B. is most ordinary law degree provided and conferred by the Indian universities that has three years duration. Nearly all the law universities follow typical LL.B. syllabus, wherein the students are uncovered to needed bar subjects.

Integrated undergraduate degrees - B.Sc. LL.B., B.A. LL.B., BBA. LL.B and B.Com LL.B these degrees are mainly offered in autonomous law schools providing five years duration.

Master of Laws (LL.M.) - LL.M. is the most ordinary postgraduate law degree that has two years duration.

Integrated MBL-LLM/ MBA-LLM - Usually 3-years of double degree incorporated course having specialization in the business law

Commencing 2009, admission to the LLB as well as LLM in the most of autonomous law schools of India is relied on the performance in the CLAT (Common Law Admission Test). Though, National Law University in Delhi, the National Law University in Orissa and private independent law schools perform their individual admission tests. Admission to the Jindal Global Law School is made through LSAT exam organized by the Law School Admission Council, USA organized by the Pearson VUE, via its affiliates in India.

In most of traditional universities, admission is made on basis of the admission test to common admission test or constituent law college for its associated colleges (like Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University). Some affiliated colleges and conventional universities also admit the student on basis of its merit in preceding examination.
