Graduate study in India

 The university system in India is mainly in the state of poor condition. In almost half districts in country, the higher education employments are terribly low, nearly two-third of the universities as well as 90 % of the colleges are rated below average in the quality parameters. India's system of higher education is third largest of the world, after the China and United States. The major governing body in tertiary level is UGC (University Grants Commission) in India that enforces the standards, advises government, and assists coordination between centre and state. Accreditation for the higher learning is managed by 12 independent institutions established by UGC.

As of the year 2009, India is having 20 central universities, 100 deemed universities, 215 state universities, and 5 institutions recognized and functioning under State Act, with 33 institutes that are having national importance. Other institutions incorporate 16000 colleges, with 1800 elite women's colleges, working under these institutions and universities. The importance in tertiary level of the education lies on the science & technology. By 2004, the Indian educational institutions consisted of huge number of technology institutions. Distance learning is the feature of system of Indian higher education.

Some of the institutions in India, like IIT (Indian Institutes of Technology) (IIT), have been internationally acclaimed for the standard of the undergraduate education of engineering. The IITs register around 8000 students yearly and alumni have added to both growths of private sector as well as public sectors in India. Nevertheless IIT's do not have any significant impact on the fundamental scientific innovation and research. A number of other institutions of the fundamental research like IISC (Indian Institute of Science), IACS (Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science), HRI (Harishchandra Research Institute), and TIFR (Tata Institute of Fundamental Research) are celebrated for the standard of research for basic mathematics and sciences. Though, India has failed in producing world class universities in both private sectors as well as in the public sector.
