Architecture Education in India
The training period for the architect is 5 years.
Architecture is educated through degree or diploma courses
in different schools/colleges of architecture all over the
country. Admission to architecture courses is based on the
admission test for evaluating candidate's aptitude in
chemistry, physics, and mathematics, with proficiency in
drawing. Minimum educational qualification for appearing to
the admission test is completion of 10+2 or equivalent
education level. Selection of Bachelor of Architecture
(B.Arch.) is based on the merit in Class XII exams,
performance in admission test, participation in the
co-curricular activities as well as interview. Most of
courses favor applications in age group of 16 to 21 years.
Subjects in architecture course incorporate practical
mathematics, history of architecture, town planning, design
& construction, sociology, economics, professional practice,
and environmental science. Computers are very important part
of training in architecture. Further specialization can be
in urban design, industrial design, town/urban planning,
landscape architecture, building engineering, environmental
planning, transport planning, etc. All these courses are
available for the B.Arch. degree or diploma holders.
Placements & Prospects
Architects may work in diverse settings: in government
departments, in private practice, in the town planning
departments like corporations, municipalities, and housing
boards, defense, railways, insurance companies, and in the
firm of builders or architects with continuous buildings
program or maintenance work.
In private practice, architect's client can be a firm, an
individual, or any local body. Generally, the architects
that are in the private practice focus on one type of
building like apartment blocks, houses, offices, schools,
etc. whereas working for the local body, architect's work
engages variety of buildings like schools, clinics, swimming
pools, stadiums, houses, etc.
Architects are in immense demand with the increasing
industrialization, urbanization, and increased requirement
for accommodation all kinds. Emoluments rely on the kind of
employment opportunities. Private consultancy in the
architecture may fetch highest returns. In the developing
economy, the challenging chances for architects will persist
to increase with additional emphasis on different kinds of
specialization like landscape architecture, environmental
planning, and interior design.
